He spent the beginning of his career at New York Life as a Registered Advisor, Partner, and Senior Partner. Nelson was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and attended Mt Hope High School in Bristol, Rhode Island. He is a proud member of the 1997 Class A boys soccer state championship team. He worked in construction during summers to help pay for college, which helped Nelson appreciate the value of hard work and the demands of manual labor.
Nelson went to graduate from Roger Willimas University, where he concentrated in Finance.
Nelson lives in Swansea, Massachusetts, with his wife, Stacy, and their two children Grayson and Peyton
